• TYPE LOCALITY. "З. Саян, оз. Буйба". "W. Sayan, Lake Buiba" [Russia].

• RANGE. From the Altai Mts. and N. Mongolia across the whole of Siberia to the Chukot Peninsula.

• DISTRIBUTION AND VARIATION. The Altai and Sayan mts., Transbaikalia, the Amur region - ssp. naina Kozhantshikov, 1923 (= koshantschikoffi 0. Bang-Haas, 1927); N. Siberia - ssp. occidentalis Verity, 1908 (=? kusnezovi Korshunov, 1995); the Far East and the Chukot Peninsula - ssp. jakutia Back, 1990.

• HABITATS AND BIOLOGY. In Siberian mountains, it inhabits alpine meadows up to 2,800 m a.s.I.; in the north, it flies over lowland and bushy tundras. Flight period: June-August. Host plants (Popova, 1988): most commonly Sisymbrium and Descurainia sophioides. Pupa hibernating, often several times.

• SIMILAR SPECIES. E. orientalis: UNH pattern more delicate, with numerous white stripes and angled spots. E. ausonia: UPS black colouration bright; as a rule, UPS not darkened and without yellowish dusting in females.
