• TYPE LOCALITY. "Amur".
• RANGE. From the Altai Mts. across the whole of Siberia to the Chukot and Ussuri regions.
• DISTRIBUTION AND VARIATION. The nominate subspecies Hies in Transbaikalia, the Amur region and the Far East(?); besides that, the following subspecies have been described: ssp. emiorientalis Verity, 1911 - the Altai and Sayan mts.; ssp. kurentzoui Beljaev, 1986 - N. Siberia, the Chukot Peninsula, the Far East; ssp. nemoralis Beljaev, 1986 - the Ussuri region.
• TAXONOMIC NOTES. It seems probable that the ssp. kurentzovi Beljaev may prove to be a good species, if information about its sympatry with the typical orientalis in the Magadan region appears to be true.
• HABITATS AND BIOLOGY. Various types of tundras and moors. Flight period: April-July. Host plants in N. America (Scott, 1986): Sisymbrium, Draba cana, Turritis glabra; in the Ussuri region (Belyaev, 1986; Danchenko, Streltsov, in press): Cardamine trifida, Dontostemon dentatus, Draba nemorosa.
• SIMILAR SPECIES. E. naina: larger; UNH white pattern composed of angular spots, without delicate stripes.
