• TYPE LOCALITY. "Sudural und Wolga-Gebiet" [SE. Russia].

• RANGE. From SE. Europe (Romania) through the steppe zone to E. Asia.

• DISTRIBUTION AND VARIATION. The S. European part to the N. Caucasus, W. and S. Siberia, the Altai, Sayan, Transbaikalia, the Amur and Ussuri regions. White pattern and whitish dusting on UPS and UNS variable; in the eastern regions (from the Altai to the Ussuri region), the dark ssp. obscurior Staudinger, 1892 is known to occur.

• HABITATS AND BIOLOGY. Dry steppe habitats, also grassy slopes and river valleys in the mountains. Flight period: May-July, presumably in a single generation. Host plant: Potentilla (Gorbunov, Korshunov, 1995).

• SIMILAR SPECIES. M. tessellum: usually larger, UPS dusting yellowish, UNS white spots smaller and more strongly angled.
