• TYPE LOCALITY. "environs de Pekin" [Beijing, China].

• SYNONYMS: selas Mabille, 1878; herculea Butler, 1881; majuscula Elwes et Edwards, 1897; amurensis Mabille, 1909; chosensis Matsumura, 1929.

• RANGE. E. Asia from the Amur region to SE. China, Korea and Japan.

• DISTRIBUTION AND VARIATION. The S. Amur and Ussuri regions, Sakhalin, the Kuriles. A highly variable species in size and development of the UPS marginal dark border and UNH pale spots.

• TAXONOMIC NOTES. 0. venata has long been confused with 0. sylvanus, both overlapping widely in distribution. The taxonomy and nomenclature of the numerous forms of both species described from different parts of their ranges are currently being revised.

• HABITATS AND BIOLOGY. Forest edges, sea-shore meadows and other grassy habitats; preferring open places. Flight period: July-August.

• SIMILAR SPECIES. 0. sylvanus: smaller, FW apex less strongly produced, UPS dark border wide and sharply defined, UNH ground colour greenish with the veins not contrasting; slight but constant differences also in male genitalia.
